Valle dell'Acate Il Moro 2017
$22.99/$19.99 on 6+ (6saves3)
If this wine were in Vittoria it would be $35-40, but since it is in the next town over in Valle dell'Acate, we get a great price on what is the best wine from Acate. Il Moro is Valle dell’Acate’s crown jewel, and has earned Italy’s vaunted DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) status for Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC. The vineyards in Acate are located roughly 120 meters above sea level, where the earth is extremely dark, almost black in color. The soil has a compact, medium-density texture and is studded with small stones that aid in drainage.

The 2017 Nero d’Avola Il Moro wafts up with a dark and dusty display of blackberries, crushed violets, mountain herbs and smoke. It’s soft and fleshy in feel, featuring ripe black fruits offset by brisk acids and salty mineral tones. A layer of grippy tannins lingers yet doesn’t get in the way of Il Moro’s vibrant personality, as it tapers off to hints of licorice and currants. While already showing quite well, a year of cellaring should help often the expression while unlocking further depths.
