2016 Ried Sulz Weissburgunder 1-STK
92 Wine Advocate
This comes from the family's warmest vineyard, where the Pinot Blanc is planted on the southeast-facing side, which is the cooler part of the site. It was fermented and aged in 700-liter oak barrels for one year and another six months in stainless steel. The wine shows an intense, concentrated, fresh and chalky bouquet of perfectly ripe white fruits (Golden Delicious apples). The palate is full-bodied, lush and tensioned, with good tannins and mineral purity in the lingering salty-piquant finish. This 2016 combines the warmth of the vineyard—characterized by its ripe, concentrated fruit—with the cooler southeast exposition that keeps the sugar content moderate, and the result is a full-bodied but medium-weight wine with just 12.5% alcohol. The finish is long, tight and tensioned and reveals a creamy/yeasty texture with grip, freshness and fine tannins. An excellent wine indeed!
