The 2017 Ottantadue, 100% Sangiovese, is a new wine from Carnasciale made from vineyards in Le Pianacce. Plump, juicy and radiant, the 2017 offers plenty of Sangiovese character, with the extra bit of textural richness that is typical of the year. Sweet red cherry, spice, new leather and rose petal build in a creamy, generous wine that will drink beautifully right out of the gate.
If Sangiovese took the form of red Burgundy or Pinot Noir, this wine would be the place to start. Purity of varietal character and terroir transparency, this is a wine to not miss and we have very little in stock in what was a drought year and short in production.
I visited Il Carnasciale back in June 2017, we were met by the Carnasciale enologist Marco Maffei and winemaker Peter Schilling. Peter showed us the home vineyard "Carnasciale", healthy and green in the warm June sun with shoots and leaves rising up from the small goblet trained old wood of the vines.
As a treat, we also got to taste a new third wine made from 100% Sangiovese called Ottantadue from the 2015 vintage. This was also very good, but clearly a different grape and a different spin on Sangiovese. In a clear glass bottle that reveals a pure, vibrant red color, it is a stripped-down, pure version of Sangiovese, unlike anything I have ever tried. The Ottantadue showed little influence of wood and instead focused on the fruit, spice, texture and raw components of Sangiovese.
The Ottantadue, meaning ‘eighty-two’, is a pure Sangiovese wine from Podere Il Carnasciale. Il Carnasciale is a cult Tuscan winery famed for their unique and experimental grape variety Caberlot, a crossing between Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which is only sold in magnum format. Podere Il Carnasciale is situated in the southern Chianti mountains in the Valdarno di Sopra region of Tuscany, thirty kilometers north of Siena and Arezzo and 60 kilometers south of Florence. The work in the vineyards is carried out entirely by hand, with the utmost respect for the clay and limestone soils with organic farming. Pruning, budding, and leaf management are all done manually, without the use of chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides.
The Ottantadue undergoes natural, spontaneous alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel and cement vessels and aged for 14 months in stainless steel and 3 months in bottle. The aromatic profile evokes hints of cherries, red fruits, pepper, aromatic and Mediterranean spices. The taste is smooth, rich, fruity, fresh, savory and round.
