Indie Xisto is intended as a clear expression of terroir and place. Made from a single vineyard that faces west in the Douro Valley, Portugal's greatest winegrowing region. Made from sustainably farmed vines. Vinification uses only indigenous yeasts. This way Luis removes all potential variability other than the soil type as an expression of terroir.
GRAPE 30% Tinta Roriz, 30% Touriga Franca, 10% Tinta Amarela, 5% Tinta Barroca, 5% Rufete, 5% Touriga Brasileira, 5% Donzelinho Tinto, 5% Malvasia Preta, 5% Touriga Femea. Sustainably farmed single vineyard planted since 1950. Tended in blue schist soil at 510 (1,673 ft) elevation.
VINIFICATION AND AGEING Whole cluster lagare fermentation, this is put into barrel for malolactic fermentation and then aged for 22 months in French oak barrels.
After a decade as winemaker at Niepoort, where he was responsible for some of the best known and highly rated wines to come out of the famed Douro and Porto producer, Luis Seabra decided that he no longer wanted to make wines to someone else’s tastes and specifications.

The 2015 Indie Xisto is roughly a blend of 30% Tinta Roriz, 20% Touriga Franca, 15% each of Tinta Barroca and Tinta Amarela and various others filling out the blend. Sourced from 70-year-old vines in a single vineyard in Alijo at 500 meters in altitude, it was aged for 22 months in used French oak. Just the second release of this wine, this is a fine and classic representative of its vintage. It's not the deepest red, but it has that intensity of fruit flavor that I love, which is lifted by the acidity. Fresh, delicious and nicely structured, although the tannins were ripe, this is irresistible. The only remaining question will be if it develops some complexity along the way. It should, but its invigorating freshness and flavor will always make it a consumer favorite. There's no track record here, but it should hold well. It is worth leaning up on this for the moment.
