95+ Antonio Galloni - Vinous
The 2013 Barolo Riserva San Giuseppe is just gorgeous. It's good to see how well the 2013 has come together since I first tasted it. Powerful and virile, with tremendous aromatic intensity and tons of structure, the 2013 has so much to offer. Time in the glass brings out myriad layers of nuance. Sage, mint, lavender, geranium, cinnamon and blood orange add an exotic flair. Put simply, the 2013 San Giuseppe is everything Barolo should be. Unlike the Vignolo, the San Giuseppe is going to need a number of years to be at its best. Even so, it is impressive in the early going.

• After bottling, the wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months more before release.

From this cru come wines of great structure but with elegance and complexity. The initial perfumes are fruity and followed by floral aspects, then spices, all open and intense. Generally excellent cellaring potential.

Vintage Characteristics: The vintage is characterized by a delicate, haunting effect in the Nebbiolo-based wines, due to the silkiness of the tannins and the balanced but not aggressive acidity.  2013 is a vintage of character. The cool, wet spring fully replenished the water tables from the drought like conditions at the end of 2012. The cool growing season bade well for Nebbiolo, and we expect great Baroli from this vintage. However, the other varietals suffered a little in the cool late summer and early autumn temperatures.
